The Overexcitabilities Workbook

For many neurodivergent people, intensities can feel like both a gift and a challenge. Emotional depth, sensory sharpness, or bursts of intellectual energy may bring joy and creativity—and at the same time, overwhelm.

The Overexcitabilities Workbook was created to help you better understand and care for these unique traits with intention and compassion.

For this project, Dr. Megan Anna Neff teamed up with Kaylyn Gray, a 2E AuDHD artist and member of the Neurodivergent Insights team. Kaylyn developed a creative self-care framework to support her own overexcitabilities, and her insights bring fresh, playful energy to this resource.

Together, we’ve designed a workbook that is both practical and creative, an invitation to honor your intensities while building balance and self-care strategies that truly fit you.

Inside the Workbook

✦ An introduction to overexcitabilities, their history, and their role in gifted and neurodivergent life
✦ Clear descriptions of the five OEs—emotional, intellectual, imaginational, psychomotor, and sensory—with space to reflect on your own experiences
✦ Exercises to help you discover your OE profile and notice how your intensities show up day-to-day
✦ A self-care framework that uses your OEs as a guide for building balanced, personalized strategies
✦ Creative practices to nurture your OEs and channel their energy in ways that feel supportive
✦ Practical antidotes and grounding tools for when your intensities feel overwhelming

This workbook is an invitation to embrace your emotional, sensory, and intellectual intensities with more curiosity, compassion, and creativity — turning what once felt overwhelming into a meaningful part of your self-care toolkit.

  • On an iPad or Tablet. You can open the PDF in an app like GoodNotes, Notability or Noteshelf → write directly on the pages with a stylus or keyboard. These apps allow typing, highlighting, and handwriting with an Apple Pencil. You just import your PDF workbook, and it becomes “fillable” by writing or typing.
  • On a Computer. If you’re on a computer, you can type your reflections right onto the workbook pages by opening the PDF in Adobe Reader (free) or another PDF viewer. Some people also like to keep a separate digital journal or Word/Google Doc open alongside the workbook, copying over prompts and writing more freely there.
