The Autistic Masking Workbook + Journal

Understanding the Complexities of Masking While Reclaiming Your Authenticity

Masking — also called camouflaging — is a common but often exhausting experience for many Autistic people. At its core, masking is often a drive for safety. It can be a way to protect against stigma, misunderstanding, or harm in environments that are not built with Autistic people in mind.

While masking can help us navigate unsafe or uncertain spaces, it also comes at a cost. Over time, masking can contribute to exhaustion, burnout, identity confusion, and mental health struggles.

This workbook and companion journal provide a thoughtful, research-informed exploration of masking and unmasking. Whether you are an Autistic adult or teen, or a therapist supporting Autistic clients, this resource offers both education and practices to deepen understanding and support gentle, safe steps toward authenticity.

Inside You’ll Find

Grounded Understanding
✦ Clear explanations of the science behind masking and its impacts on mental health and burnout.
✦ Insights into the advantages, costs, and complexities of masking, including valid reasons people choose to mask.

Intersectional Lens
✦ Exploration of how masking intersects with gender, race, and other identities.
✦ Space to reflect on how your own context shapes your masking experiences.

Practical Tools
✦ Journaling prompts and exercises to support gradual unmasking and self-awareness.
✦ Practices for exploring authenticity in ways that feel safe and sustainable.

This is not a workbook that tells you to “stop masking.” Instead, it offers knowledge, reflection, and practices that honor both the necessity and the cost of masking — helping you move toward deeper self-understanding and, when possible, more authentic expression.
