DSM in Pictures: ADHD (Clinical Edition)

A visual guide to the DSM-5 criteria, made to share with your clients

Diagnosis can feel mysterious and confusing. This resource is meant to help demystify what goes into an ADHD diagnosis.

DSM in Pictures: ADHD walks through the diagnostic criteria for ADHD visually, one criterion at a time. It translates the clinical language of the DSM-5 into images and plain explanations, so the people you work with can see how ADHD is defined, what each criterion is pointing at, and how the traits actually show up in daily life.

The Clinical Edition comes with a license that lets you bring it directly into your work. You can use it when explaining ADHD to clients or walking through how they meet criteria.

What it is

A visual, image-forward guide to the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, created by Dr. Megan Anna Neff, a neurodivergent clinical psychologist.

It uses the direct language of the DSM for educational accuracy, while gently naming where that language is pathologizing and does not tell the whole story.

What’s inside

  • Criterion A, inattention: the nine traits and how they show up in adult daily life, with examples like forgetfulness, difficulty organizing tasks, and the systems people build to compensate
  • Criterion A, hyperactivity-impulsivity: the nine traits, including internal restlessness, interrupting, and difficulty resting
  • Criteria B through E laid out in clear terms: age of onset, the two-setting rule, impact on functioning, and differentiation from other explanations
  • The three subtypes explained: primarily inattentive, primarily hyperactive-impulsive, and combined, with notes on how presentation differs across age and gender
  • A Misdiagnosis Monday diagram mapping where the subtypes overlap and where they diverge, useful for differential thinking

Who it’s for

Clinicians, assessors, and coaches who want a clear, affirming psychoeducation tool to use in session, and a way to demystify what goes into an ADHD diagnosis.

It is especially useful for clients who process visually, who are newly identified or self-identifying in adulthood, or who carry shame from years of being misread before anyone named the ADHD.

What the Clinical License allows
