The Environmental Factors Workbook

Understanding How Context Shapes Emotion

This digital workbook explores how our surroundings, physical, social, and cultural, shape our emotional lives. As the fifth and final book in the Neurodivergent Emotions series, it invites you to look beyond the individual and consider how environment, context, and systems impact emotional regulation and well-being.

Rather than focusing on what’s “inside” us alone, this workbook widens the lens to include what’s around us — from our physical landscapes to social structures, from daily stressors to the broader environments that hold (and sometimes harm) us.

Inside You’ll Explore

Mapping Our Stressors: Understanding Environmental Factors
Through an ecological lens, you’ll begin to see your emotions in context — influenced not only by your inner world, but also by the settings, systems, and relationships that surround you. This framework helps you trace how everyday stressors and supports interact with your nervous system, revealing patterns across the environments you move through.

Environmental Reinforcers
Notice how certain environments subtly reinforce behaviors or emotional states. Through guided reflection, uncover the invisible cues shaping your patterns and discover small environmental shifts that can better support your well-being.

Minority Stress, Traumatic Invalidation, and Intersectionality
Explore how chronic invalidation and minority stress impact emotional health, particularly for those navigating intersecting marginalized identities. This chapter offers a framework for understanding how systemic and interpersonal dynamics compound stress responses.

Designing for Regulation: Environmental Design and Emotional Well-being
Examine how physical space, light, texture, color, layout, and symbolism, can influence mood and safety. You’ll learn how to design or modify environments that foster calm, focus, and belonging.
