The Interest-Based Nervous System Workbook

Working With, Not Against, Your ADHD Brain

Many ADHD adults, parents, therapists, and educators know the frustration of inconsistent motivation and attention. Often, this leads to cycles of burnout and shame — not because of personal failings, but because most systems were built around an “importance-based” model that doesn’t align with the ADHD nervous system.

This workbook introduces a different way of understanding ADHD: the interest-based nervous system. Instead of focusing on deficits, it helps you recognize the conditions that actually spark engagement, motivation, and follow-through.

What You’ll Find Inside

Foundational Understanding
✦ Learn how the interest-based nervous system explains many core ADHD experiences.
✦ See why importance-based strategies often fall flat, and what approaches better fit ADHD brains.

Practical Tools & Exercises
✦ Reflective activities to identify what drives your attention: passion, play, novelty, interest, and urgency.
✦ Step-by-step prompts for experimenting with motivators and designing strategies that work in your daily life.

Personal Insights & Guidance
✦ Relatable reflections and guidance from Dr. Megan Anna Neff, blending professional expertise and lived experience.
✦ Exercises that invite you to experiment — because learning what works for your system comes through practice.

ADHD-Friendly Approaches
✦ Ideas for bringing creativity, competition, and real-world relevance into everyday tasks.
✦ Space to build your own personalized “motivator manual” — a resource you can return to whenever you feel stuck.

✍️ Using Your Workbook Digitally

  • On an iPad or Tablet. You can open the PDF in an app like GoodNotes, Notability or Noteshelf → write directly on the pages with a stylus or keyboard. These apps allow typing, highlighting, and handwriting with an Apple Pencil. You just import your PDF workbook, and it becomes “fillable” by writing or typing.
  • On a Computer. If you’re on a computer, you can type your reflections right onto the workbook pages by opening the PDF in Adobe Reader (free) or another PDF viewer. Some people also like to keep a separate digital journal or Word/Google Doc open alongside the workbook, copying over prompts and writing more freely there.
